The 2024 cashew export season is underway, and Tanzanian farmers have an opportunity to benefit from strong international demand. Here is what you need to know to get the best price for your cashew nuts this season.

Tanzania is one of Africa's leading cashew producers, with Mtwara, Lindi and Coast regions producing the majority of the country's raw cashew nuts (RCN). International buyers — particularly in India and Vietnam — continue to show strong demand for Tanzanian cashew.

Quality is the most important factor in determining the price you receive for your cashew. Buyers assess outturn (the amount of kernel per bag), moisture content and the presence of foreign matter. Cashew with higher outturn and lower moisture commands premium prices.

To achieve the best quality: harvest at the right time (when the cashew apple is fully ripe), dry your cashew properly before storage, avoid mixing different grades, and store in clean, dry conditions away from moisture.
